Project Overview
Traipse is a fictional adventure travel magazine dedicated to offering immersive travel experiences through the lens of distinct global cities. Each issue of Traipse dives into a city, exploring its unique culture, vibrant life, and artistic expressions. The magazine is tailored for an audience that craves adventure, values cultural exploration, and appreciates visual storytelling.
My role was to conceptualize the theme for each issue, craft engaging columns, and design both the covers and internal page spreads, ensuring every element resonated with the adventurous spirit of our readers. In this project, I blended dynamic collage and montage techniques, creating layouts that capture the essence of each destination’s mood and character.

Design Process

I started with research and drawing a mind map which allowed me to have comprehensive insights into the company and the project. The mind map categorized key components such as target audiences, product types, and core messages. This structured approach ensures that every design choice can support the company's message and the specific needs of its stakeholders.
Research Board
This research board is designed to serve as a foundational blueprint, guiding the visual and thematic direction of the magazine. I choose vivid, high-contrast images to enhance the visual appeal and mirror the energy and diversity of urban travel destinations. It collates diverse elements from vibrant urban scenes, cultural icons, and dynamic human interactions, symbolizing the eclectic mix that characterizes each featured city.

The color palette is intentionally vibrant and eclectic, including bold yellows, deep blues, mint, and energizing reds, reflecting the liveliness and cultural richness of city landscapes. These colors are not only visually striking but also functionally effective in drawing attention to key elements across the magazine’s spreads, such as headlines and key visuals. I want this color palette to convey a lively and inviting atmosphere, encouraging readers to immerse themselves in the stories and settings presented.
Nameplate Design
In designing the nameplate for "Traipse" magazine, I focused on a clean and modern aesthetic that would resonate with our target audience—travel and culture enthusiasts who are drawn to artistic expression. I chose a bold, straightforward typography to ensure the title is impactful and legible, crucial for standing out in the competitive magazine rack space. Initially, I experimented with both serif and sans-serif fonts to balance the contemporary feel with a touch of tradition. However, after some trials, I settled on a serif font for its playful look, which aligns well with the magazine's focus on vibrant, dynamic travel stories.

The tagline "Step into Wanderlust" positioned consistently below the title acts as a direct invitation to the readers, encouraging them to immerse themselves in the world of travel. This minimalistic approach in the nameplate design ensures that the magazine's visual identity remains distinctive and recognizable across different issues, while still allowing flexibility within the overarching brand framework.
Layout Planning
When planning the layout for Traipse magazine, I emphasized clarity and visual engagement to captivate the reader’s interest and guide them through a journey within each issue. The geometric shapes in the drafts are placeholders for the collage art that will be integrated. These shapes are not final design elements but serve as guides to ensure that the collage artworks will seamlessly blend into the page, enhancing the visual storytelling. This method allows me to experiment with spatial arrangements and visual flow before finalizing the dynamic and visually captivating collages that characterize each spread.

Deliverables

I started with research and drawing a mind map which allowed me to have comprehensive insights into the company and the project. The mind map categorized key components such as target audiences, product types, and core messages. This structured approach ensures that every design choice can support the company's message and the specific needs of its stakeholders.
Covers
For each issue, I used a unified format and tailored the visual elements to reflect the unique characteristics of each featured city. For the first issue focusing on Shanghai, I merged traditional elements like the maglev train and modern skyscrapers with softer tones of cherry blossoms to capture the city's blend of rapid modernization and rich cultural heritage. The second cover, centered on Miami, bursts with vibrant colors and energetic imagery like architecture and beach scenes to evoke a sense of lively, tropical escapism. The third issue, depicting Boston, combines historical landmarks with contemporary urban life to reflect the city's blend of history and modernity in a collage that feels both educational and adventurous.

I hope this design can ensure that the magazine stands out on shelves and offers readers a taste of what to expect inside: diverse narratives spun through visually rich storytelling.
Spreads
When designing the internal spreads, I emphasized maintaining a cohesive visual language that aligned with the overarching theme of adventure and culture. Each spread utilizes collage and montage techniques, blending vibrant photography with playful graphic elements to mirror the dynamism of urban exploration. Also, I selected typography that ensures clarity and readability, which harmonizes with the energetic visual stories. The color choices for the spreads are deliberately synced with the magazine's color palette to enhance brand consistency and highlight the unique atmosphere of each featured city.
Electronic Format
Considering the flexibility and accessibility, Traipse can also be present in the digital world, such as tablet, mobile, and PC. The digital version is designed for readers who prefer digital media, allowing them to delve into immersive travel stories with just a few swipes on their devices.

Reflections

I am thrilled with how it captured the essence of different global cities using collage art. This project enhanced my skills in visual storytelling, allowing me to integrate cultural and contemporary elements seamlessly. Also, adapting the magazine for both print and digital formats is a wonderful experience in flexible design. It helps me find my passion for layout creation and setting a solid foundation for future projects.
