Project Overview
This project aimed to create a series of corporate communication pieces to reflect the key message of sustainability of Mattel, Inc. The purpose of this project is to provide transparency and accountability regarding the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives. It aims to communicate Mattel’s progress, goals, and strategies in sustainability to audiences, highlighting the company's efforts in improving the safety of products, reducing environmental impact and promoting ethical practices.
My role as graphic designer was to create a postcard, three posts for social media, brand touch points, and a sustainability report.

Design Process

I started with research and drawing a mind map which allowed me to have comprehensive insights into the company and the project. The mind map categorized key components such as target audiences, product types, and core messages. This structured approach ensures that every design choice can support the company's message and the specific needs of its stakeholders.
Mind Map

Mood Board
When I drafted the mood board for the project, I wanted to effectively communicate the company's dedication to sustainability to a diverse audience. The mood board features moments of children playing joyfully, parents accompanying their children, and children engaging with toys in natural settings. These images are selected not only to appeal to the emotions of parents but also to emphasize Mattel's commitment to sustainability.
Color Palette
I designed a vibrant color palette featuring bright pink, sky blue, and navy blue, reflecting the playful nature of Mattel's brand. These colors are chosen to attract the audience's attention and evoke feelings of creativity and excitement. I came to these colors for the report through the company’s primary product lines such as Barbie dolls in pink and the universal trust in blue. The particular shades are added to create a vibrant, energetic touch that makes the sustainability message stand out and feel dynamic.

Brighter colors like pink and sky blue will be used more prominently in areas intended to catch the eye, such as headlines and key visuals, while the deeper blue will be used as a grounding element to ensure that the most important messages stand out effectively.
Typography
The typography choices of Montserrat and Open Sans can balance between friendly and professional, which is perfect for communicating important company messages in this project. 

Montserrat can convey a sense of clarity and professionalism, which is ideal for a wide range of marketing materials. While Open Sans has a clean and neutral appearance, ensuring that the heavy texts are legible.

Each post is crafted to focus on a single product, surrounded by playful, dynamic graphical elements that highlight the product's sustainability features.
These posts are designed to be immediately engaging to promote user interaction (likes, shares, comments) and educate the audience about Mattel's commitment to sustainability. The posts also help in building a consistent brand image on social media, a crucial platform for contemporary marketing strategies.
Sustainability Report
The report is crucial for stakeholders interested in Mattel's environmental impact and governance. In the report, there is a comprehensive layout that includes charts, infographics, and detailed textual content. The design is in a clean and informative style, with strategic use of colour to highlight key information.

Reflections

This experience advanced my ability to design corporate communications that effectively convey key messages and uphold a consistent brand image. Moreover, it helps me understand how large corporations can implement and communicate sustainability messages. When facing the challenges and opportunities in embedding sustainability into business models and corporate identities, I'm more confident in integrating visual and textual elements to foster a stronger connection between the brand and its target audiences.
